The North Carolina Department of Transportation invites you to join us, along with the American
Association of State Highway Officials and our nation, in celebrating the 50th Anniversary of
the signing of the Federal Highway Act of 1956. This landmark legislation, signed by President
Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 29, 1956, provided initial funding for construction of the
National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, known as our interstate highway system. This
system of highways has significantly improved our mobility, highway safety, quality of life
and commerce.
This commemorative Web site was designed to share information with you about the history of
North Carolina's interstate building era, offer educational resources and to engage you in the
celebration.
From north to south and east to west, interstates make up a vital part of our country's
transportation infrastructure. From the mountains to the sea, North Carolina's 1,083 miles of
interstates provide safe and convenient travel for millions of motorists each year. Please join
us in celebrating the first 50 years of America's interstates.
