Remarks for Chief Deputy Secretary Dan DeVane
Celebrate Raeford Event

Raeford

· Thank you for inviting me here this evening.

· It's good to get back home and out of Raleigh. There's no place like Raeford, and I'm glad to be back with you.

· This evening's ceremony marks an important milestone for Raeford - a city with a proud history and bright future.

· The downtown streetscape project has been in the works for many years, and it is exciting to celebrate this project in time for the upcoming holiday season.

· This project is especially meaningful for me, as I used to own two shops right here along Main Street.

· I can tell you from firsthand experience that the appearance of a town's central business district reflects the community and character of its people.

· From the new streetlights and sidewalks, to landscaping and street furniture, I can truly say that this project is an outstanding testament to the citizens of this fine community.

· I am also pleased that the N.C. Department of Transportation had a role in making this project a reality.

· As part of the department's mission, we are committed to providing the transportation infrastructure necessary to help communities attract new industry and boost economic development.

· Transportation projects such as this play a critical role in the future economic growth of communities across North Carolina.

· Just as small North Carolina towns once found roots in their downtown districts, they will also find their future in the revitalization of those same city blocks.

· As people are drawn to Raeford's downtown to enjoy these enhancements, the ambiance of the area hopefully will also invite them to come back to or even become a part of this growing community.

· Projects like this also strengthen the ties between state agencies and local communities.

· A number of state and and local groups and agencies are represented here tonight to celebrate the success of this project, and I would like to thank each of them for their partnership in these efforts.

· For our part, NCDOT worked closely with the city to coordinate the resurfacing of Main Street in conjunction with other improvements.

· By planning responsibly and working together on projects that will benefit us all, we will certainly bring success and progress to every corner of North Carolina.

· As Gov. Easley says, we are one North Carolina. And that means that opportunities are out there for all of us, be it a rural area, a small town or the capitol city.

· Congratulations on all your hard work and for making this streetscape project a reality.

· Thank you again for inviting me to join you for such a special occasion.
