Remarks for Secretary Tippett
Introduction of Rep. Howard Coble

Good afternoon and I want to thank you for inviting me here today.
It is my honor to introduce our keynote speaker, Rep. Howard Coble.
Rep. Coble represents the sixth congressional district, which spans North Carolina's Piedmont from Alamance to Rowan counties and includes a large portion of the Sandhills region.
The sixth district also covers portions of NCDOT highway divisions seven, eight and nine.
Coble is a true Tarheel native, born and raised in the Greensboro area.
After high school, he attended Appalachian State University and Guilford College, where he received a bachelor of arts in history. Following graduation, Coble continued his education by receiving his Juris Doctor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1962.
Coble has led a life of service to both our state and nation.
He served for more than five years on active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard and then an additional 18 years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. His last reserve assignment was as the commanding officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Unit in Wilmington.
Coble began his civilian career with State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company where he worked for seven years.
He was then named the assistant county attorney for Guilford County. In 1969, he was named the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the middle district of North Carolina.
In 1973, Coble was tapped to serve as the Secretary of the N.C. Department of Revenue and worked in that capacity until 1977.
Afterwards, he joined the law firm of Turner, Enochs and Sparrow in Greensboro.
Coble served in the N.C. House of Representatives in 1969 and then again from 1979 through 1984. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1984.
During his tenure in the U.S. House, Coble has served on many committees. Currently, he is the chairman of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security.
He is also a member of the Committee on Judiciary, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Aviation Subcommittee.
Professionally, Coble is a member of the Greensboro Bar Association, the N.C. Bar Association, the N.C. State Bar, the Guilford College Board of Visitors and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Board of Visitors.
In his personal time, Coble is a member of Alamance Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, the Lions Club and the Sons of the American Revolution.
