Good afternoon.
It is certainly a pleasure to be here today. I know you are in the middle of learning about the worksite wellness program, so I'll be brief.
I am pleased that the N.C. Department of Transportation is partnering with the State Health Plan to develop a wellness plan for our employees. Secretary Tippett and I both believe that this plan will have significant benefit.
The important work that you are doing here today will lay the foundation for worksite wellness plans for our department.
With more than 14,000 personnel throughout the state, NCDOT's employees are our most important asset.
A program that encourages proper nutrition, increased physical activity, stress management and smoking cessation will also lead to increased productivity in the workplace as well as a more pleasant overall working experience.
It may even encourage healthier lifestyle choices in our employees' families, friends and communities.
Healthier lifestyle choices also lead to decreased illnesses and medical visits, which in turn would lead to lower health insurance costs.
I think everyone can agree that is a major benefit to any wellness plan.
As you continue developing your plans, be assured that you have the support of the department's administration. Your work is an investment in NCDOT's future.
