DOT Employee Memorial Plaque Dedication Ceremony Remarks for Gene Conti
DOT Employee Memorial Plaque Dedication Ceremony
Thursday, May 24, 2001    2:30 p.m.

Good afternoon.

Thank you Dan for that introduction.

It is an honor to be with you today to officially dedicate the NCDOT Memorial Plaque. This plaque and dedication ceremony has been a long- time coming for the department and for all the families represented here today.

And as we reflect on the significance of the occasion, we are reminded of those we love-particularly those who have brought such honor and pride to DOT.

The employees listed on this plaque were loved by their families and their communities.

And even though some may have served in the department a short time, their DOT co-workers and the citizens of North Carolina sincerely appreciate their service and sacrifice.

Whether they repaired roads and bridges or saved citizens stranded in the ravaging floods of a hurricane, these employees were special.

Every day, our employees leave their families and risk their lives to provide this state with the safest and most efficient transportation system in the nation.

We owe a debt of gratitude for the sacrifices these employees have made -whatever their job, wherever they worked.

I can think of no better tribute to them than dedicating this plaque today.

Now as visitors enter the Transportation Building they will be reminded of 86 heroes who gave their lives for the department and the state.

We will always remember them as friends and colleagues-and will never forget what they mean to the department.

They will always hold a special place in our hearts and memories.

And we will continue to hold you-the families-in our hearts and prayers as well.

We can never say enough or do enough to make up for the losses each of you experienced.

You can take comfort in being part of our DOT family-and knowing that we loved and cherished your sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, just as you did.

It is my honor to dedicate this plaque in honor of our DOT employees who lost their lives in service to this department and state.

May it serve as a reminder to all those who walk through the doors of the Transportation Building of our heroes who gave their lives for the benefit of all of us.
