Brief Remarks for Chief Deputy Secretary Dan Devane
John F. Strickland Highway Dedication Ceremony
Monday, April 18, 2005 11:00 a.m.
Anderson Creek, N.C.
Thank you, Mac, for that kind introduction.
Throughout North Carolina, highways, bridges and roadways are dedicated in remembrance of law enforcement officers who make the ultimate sacrifice while protecting our neighbors and friends.
This high honor is extended only to those North Carolinians who have made a lasting contribution to our state.
Today, I am pleased to be with you as we add to this distinguished honor roll of public servants by dedicating Nursery Road here in Harnett County in honor of Deputy John Fitzgerald Strickland.
It is indeed a fitting tribute to a man who spent his life in service to this community and our nation.
After graduating from Western Harnett High School, John enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he spent 20 years defending our nation.
When he retired in 2002, he returned home, to this community and followed in his father's footsteps by joining the Harnett County Sheriff's Office in January 2003.
John's life of service continued into his personal life.
He was a dedicated husband, father and friend.
I'm told he had a wonderful personality and a great sense of humor.
John was also a man of compassion, who would not hesitate to help anyone who was in need.
It is certainly clear that he left a tremendously positive impact on all those who knew him and that he is greatly missed by this entire community.
Today, it is my distinct honor to officially dedicate Nursery Road in honor and memory of Deputy John F. Strickland.
Like John, this road is at the heart of Harnett County and a part of the daily lives of its citizens.
From today on, all who travel this road will have the opportunity to reflect upon the life and legacy of a true tarheel hero.
Joshua, on behalf of the N.C. Department of Transportation, I have the honor of presenting you with this small replica sign in honor of your father's sacrifice.
Thank you.
