Introduction
Thank you, Willie, for that introduction.

I want to welcome you to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

You are a talented and dedicated group of students and we are pleased to have you working with us this summer.

I hope you are as excited about working here as we are about working with and learning from you.

Importance of Diversity at DOT
As you begin with your internships, you will soon discover that the North Carolina Department of Transportation involves more than road crews, engineers and highways.

We employ a broad range of people from various disciplines and academic backgrounds.

Each person and department plays an integral part of accomplishing our mission, which is to support a safe and integrated transportation system that enhances the state.

It takes the skills and knowledge of everyone from biologists and archeologists to business managers and planners to accomplish our goals.

We truly are a team and work hard to provide the best transportation system in the nation.

I hope you understand the significant role you and your work will have, not only in this department but for the state of North Carolina.

This internship is a wonderful opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of the transportation field and obtain valuable experiences that you can carry throughout your careers.

Conclusion
I trust that by the end of this experience, you will have discovered something new and exciting about this department, your profession and yourself.

I encourage you to make most of every assignment and every opportunity. They will prepare you for your future.

Once again, allow me to congratulate you for being selected for this program.

Thank you for sharing your time, talent and energy with the department and citizens of this state.

I wish you great success in your work this summer and in the years ahead.
