"R U BUCKLED?" is an initiative created to encourage safety belt usage among teenage drivers. "R U BUCKLED?" started off in 53 high schools in 16 counties in the fall of 2005. The program requires drivers and passengers at all participating schools to buckle their safety belts before leaving school property or risk losing high school parking privileges.
According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, 156 15-to-19 year olds were killed in North Carolina in 2007 traffic crashes, with 80 of them not wearing their seat belts. Nearly 63,000 students from 198 high schools in over 70 counties will participate in "R U Buckled?" this year.
