Guidelines for Establishing Salaries for Temporary Transportation Workers

The salary range for temporary Transportation Workers is $10.20 to $18.67

For temporary employees, previously hired as a Highway Maintenance Worker, Machine Operator I, Machine Operator II, or Bridge Worker I classes:

  1. If the job requires that employee primarily perform manual tasks such as cleaning pipes and ditches, cutting bushes and trees, erecting guardrail, loading and unloading material, raking asphalt, picking up litter, sweeping, and flagging, the minumum of $10.20 should be used.

  2. If the bona fide job requirements call for additional skilled tasks, the value of the corresponding skill blocks may be added to the minumum to arrive at the starting salary; however, this salary may not exceed $18.67 per hour.

Note: Management should exercise caution in establishing the salaries of temporary employees. There have been cases where the salaries of temporary employees have been higher than the salaries they received upon their employment in a permanent position.

Retired employees being re-employed in temporary positions should be brought back at the $10.20 minumum, unless exceptions justifying a different salary are submitted and approved by DOT Human Resources.
