Professional Development Hours

In May 1994, the North Carolina State Board of Registration approved action requiring mandatory continuing professional competency as a condition of renewal of registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. This action requires each registrant to obtain and report an established number of earned credits of Professional Development Hours (PDH) for each renewal period.

To assist its Professional Engineers, NCDOT has obtained "Approved Sponsor" status from the State Board. With this status, all courses and activities prequalified by the NCDOT will be recognized by the Board without further qualification from the individual registrant.

Working with the Board of Registration, the Technical Training Committee has prepared a list of courses that have been pre-approved for PDH credit. PDF Other courses will be added as needed. Each registrant should work with their training coordinator and supervisor to attend any of these courses. In addition to these courses, workshops and seminars given by a particular branch may be preapproved as set out in the attached policy for PDH credit.

Following completion of the course, each instructor will be responsible for submitting a list of participants requesting PDH credit to the State Highway Administrator’s office. The Technical Training Committee Chairperson will submit quarterly reports to the State Board of Registration listing the courses and participants for PDH credit.

This policy is for courses and seminars sponsored by NCDOT. PDH credit can also be obtained by attending courses given by other approved sponsors such as ITRE, universities, professional organizations, and attending conferences and related seminars. The registrant is responsible for keeping their own records for PDH credit and submitting them to the Board.
