Did you know?How many airports does North Carolina have?North Carolina has 74 publicly-owned airports and nearly 300 privately-owned airports. Nine airports have regularly scheduled airline service; four are international. How many aircraft are registered in the state?There are more than 7,000 registered aircraft based in the state and 15,000 licensed pilots. How many passengers fly in and out of North Carolina airports?More than 35 million passengers fly to and from North Carolina each year and more than 800 million pounds of air freight originate annually in the state. Does NCDOT provide funding for private airports?No, under the provisions of the North Carolina General Statutes, only airports that are owned by a unit of government are eligible for state financial assistance. Private airports are eligible to receive technical guidance and assistance. What funding is available for publicly-owned airports?Grants of state and federal funds are available through the Division of Aviation for planning, land acquisition, and construction of runways, taxiways, and aprons. A local matching share of 10% to 50% of the total cost is required depending upon the type of project. Who is responsible for assuring flight safety and investigating allegations of unsafe flight?The Federal Aviation Administration's Flight Standards District Office is the regulatory agency for flight safety.
