NCDOT-Division of Aviation, in the interest of reducing weather related landing accidents caused by wind direction and magnitude, have a program to provide windsocks, either free or at cost, to airports in North Carolina. To request your windsock, please determine which windsock you are eligible for, download the appropriate form below, and submit it following the instructions.

Free Windsock: Eligible NC Airports or Heliports for a free windsock are identified as follows:

Publicly owned airport or heliport
Privately owned, Public Use airport or heliport listed in the current FAA Airport/Facility Directory
Designated Emergency Medical Service (EMS) landing site (i.e. hospital heliport)

To Purchase a Windsock: Airports or Heliports, which are privately owned and private use, may purchase a windsock at our cost, plus shipping and handling. The various sizes and their cost are listed below. A check or money order payable to NCDOT - Division of Aviation should accompany your form when submitted.

18" diameter x 8’ long = $35.00 (including S&H)
18" diameter x 5’ long = $32.00 (including S&H)
24" diameter x 8’ long = $41.00 (including S&H)
36" diameter x 12’ long = $68.00 (including S&H)

Requests for free or to purchase windsocks should be made on the designated form and mailed or faxed to the Division of Aviation.
