Urban Bicycle Maps

Demand for information on getting around town by bike continues to grow. In response, many communities have requested project funding from NCDOT to develop urban area bicycle maps. Working with local cyclists and staff people, the Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation has produced most of the maps listed below. They are available locally from the sources listed and, usually, at area bike shops. Most are free.

Asheville and Buncombe County Bicycle Transportation Map
This suitability map helps cyclists make good choices about where to ride, based on their own level of cycling ability and traffic handling skills. Since this is a mountainous area, demanding climbs are highlighted. Parks and other major destinations and points of interest are shown. Enlargements for Asheville, Weaverville and Black Mountain provide more detailed information for those areas. The 10 locally signed neighborhood bike routes in Asheville are also highlighted. Comprehensive safety information and riding tips are included. Regulations for bicycling on the Blue Ridge Parkway are listed.

Burlington Park-Way Bicycle Map
This map was produced by the City of Burlington Planning Department to show the city-wide system of routes that connect the six major parks in the city. The three signed routes follow local streets and sections of off-road connectors.

Carrboro Bikeways Map
For many years, the Town of Carrboro has worked with NCDOT and private developers to provide bicycle accommodations, both on-road and off-road, throughout the area. This map highlights the locations of existing and planned bike lanes and bike paths.

Town of Cary Bicycle Map and Rider's Guide
As a Bicycle-friendly Community, the Town of Cary considers bicycles an essential component of a balanced transportation system. Cary's bicycle map and rider's guide was produced to highlight over 10 miles of striped bike lanes and 46 miles of signed bike routes throughout the Town of Cary, in addition to over 12 miles of existing bicycle-friendly greenways. On the reverse side of the route map, detailed information concerning bicycle safety information, individual bicycle route descriptions, basic traffic riding techniques, nighttime riding tips and commuting information are highlighted.

Durham Bike Map
Covering the most urbanized part of Durham, this suitability map helps cyclists get around town on roads that match their traffic handling skills. The suitability ratings highlight systems of neighborhood streets, local commuting streets, busy through routes and touring routes. Greenway trails are also highlighted. In addition, locations of parks, schools, public buildings and points of interest are shown. Information on laws, safety tips and effective cycling techniques is included.

Greensboro Metropolitan Area Bicycle Map
In 2007, Greensboro established a new bike route system based on recommendations from a comprehensive plan for pedestrian, bicycle, and greenway facilities. Along with the new routes came a new bicycle map that provides an overview of road conditions and routes for bicycling. The map includes roads, greenways, and major destinations in Greensboro and surrounding areas. It also includes safety tips and relative suitability ratings for main roadways, which can help you create your own route and ride safely.

High Point Area Bicycle Map
This map provides information on traveling by bike in the High Point Urban Area and surrounding communities. Eight signed routes connect the localities and major destinations, following more lightly traveled city streets and rural roadways. Enlargements of High Point, Jamestown, Archdale, Trinity and Thomasville are provided. Locations of parks, museums, public buildings, schools and colleges and other points of interest are highlighted. A park matrix that shows facilities and recreational opportunities at each park is provided. Comprehensive safety information and riding tips are included.

Mecklenburg/Union Counties Bicycle Suitability Map
This map is designed to help cyclists use the existing network of thoroughfares to travel through this busy, urbanized area. Five designations are shown —  moderate, advanced, extreme caution, not recommended and prohibited. Collector streets, which are not rated but are typically suitable for bicycling, are also highlighted. Locations of parks, museums, libraries, schools and other destinations are shown. Safety information is provided.

Raleigh Bicycle Route Map
This map highlights a 150-mile system of signed bicycle routes. Nine cross-town routes connect neighborhoods, parks, schools and points of interest. Four short recreational loop routes, one in each quadrant of the city, highlight good places for novice cyclists or families to ride. The system of off-road greenways and bike paths is also shown. A park matrix shows the facilities at 45 parks in the area. Comprehensive information on laws, safety tips and safe riding techniques is included.

Wilmington Bike Map
The Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization, in cooperation with the Cape Fear Breeze alternative transportation program, recently published a new bicycle map intended for bicycle commuters and enthusiasts. It identifies area attractions and bicycle facilities, local bike routes and the NCDOT Bicycling Highways routes.  Comprehensive information on laws and safe bike handling techniques is included.  It is available at municipal offices and information centers throughout the region and can be ordered from:

Winston-Salem / Forsyth County Bike Map
This map features 25 designated bike routes which show the best ways across town to parks, schools and shopping areas as well as routes into the countryside and to surrounding communities. An enlargement of downtown Winston-Salem provides detailed street information and highlights the locations of special points of interest. A park matrix shows facilities and recreational opportunities at 55 parks in the area. Comprehensive safety information is included.
