Introduction — Bicycle Project Highlights

In its efforts to increase the safety of bicyclists in North Carolina, the Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation has undertaken many types of bicycle projects: construction of off-road facilities and on-road highway improvements; safety and education programs; bicycle route designation and signing; and other projects to facilitate bicycle transportation. The projects described here provide a representative sample of projects that successfully address specific needs, problems or issues related to improving bicycle transportation. Go to Bicycle TIP Projects to see a more complete listing of bicycle projects in North Carolina.

Construction projects fall into two categories. These are:

Independent projects — those that are funded and built independently of a scheduled highway improvement. To see a list of independent bicycling TIP projects, click here (PDF, 48k).

Incidental projects — those completed in conjunction with a scheduled highway improvement. To see a list of incidental TIP projects, click here (PDF, 56k).
