Available Funding

The funding available through North Carolina’s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program will facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools.  Planning; education, enforcement and encouragement programs; and infrastructure enhancements are all vital components of creating a safe environment for bicycling and walking to school.  The North Carolina Safe Routes to School Program may provide funding for all of these activities.

SRTS grant funding will be provided on a grant reimbursement basis through a competitive application process.  The NCDOT SRTS Program will fund innovative, effective plans, programs, and projects in locations across the state.  The funding categories are listed below.  Program guidelines and the application and instructions for each funding category are available.   For questions, check out the Frequently Asked Questions or contact Sarah O'Brien, Safe Routes to School Interim Coordinator, skworth@ncsu.edu.
