Basics of Bicycling Curriculum

This elementary school-level course was developed in 1990 by the North Carolina Department of Transportation Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation and the Bicycle Federation of America (now the National Center for Bicycling and Walking). More than half of the 120 school systems across North Carolina have used the program, which currently reaches approximately 60,000 fourth and fifth graders annually. This complete curriculum package includes a clearly written and easy-to-use Instructor’s Guide. A video provides an overview and tips on teaching the program as well as two instructional modules for the students. The Guide offers step-by-step instructions so that interested adults of differing cycling abilities can teach the course, using outside resources where necessary to augment their own skills.

The curriculum includes 7 lessons, requiring 7 classes. The first two are taught in the classroom, while the remaining lessons have the students learning on their bikes on an outside course. The lessons cover these topics and skills:

Lesson 1: Course Introduction
Lesson 2: High Risk Situations
Lesson 3: Getting Ready to Ride
Lesson 4: Bike Handling Skills
Lesson 5: Traffic Skills 1
Lesson 6: Traffic Skills 2
Lesson 7: Summary & Evaluation

All instructions are included for laying out the course and for conducting the lessons. The Appendix includes a list of equipment needed, tips, tools to use, and other resources for the instructor. A separate section provides all handouts necessary for the course, including a parent letter and permission slip.

A review copy for North Carolina based schools and organizations is available from the Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation. We regret that we cannot provide this service to out-of-state requestors.

North Carolina school administrators and teachers who are interested in offering the Basics of Bicycling should contact the Division of Bicycle & Pedestrian Transportation by phone (919) 807-0777 or by email.
