NCDOT Reminds Motorists and Bicyclists to Safely Share the Road
The month of May is traditionally recognized as National Bicycle Safety Month and with more than 900 bicycle-motor vehicle crashes reported to the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles each year, the N.C. Department of Transportation reminds bicyclists and motorists to safely share the roads and be more alert during the spring and summer months.  Click links for more information on the NCDOT, Bicycle Safety Press Release, Bicycle Law and Crash Data Tool.

Safety promotions and education have been an integral part of the Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation’s (DBPT) efforts since its inception in 1974. In its first 10 years, DBPT produced many safety materials , including curriculum guides, manuals, posters, pamphlets, handouts, and others. In recent years, the Division’s safety and education work has focused on developing programs, producing materials, initiating research, and collaborating with other agencies interested in bicycle and pedestrian safety. One result of this collaboration, an interactive crash data tool, is easily accessible through a link in this section to help users analyze crash data. This section includes the following subsections that explain the Division’s current safety and education efforts.

Bicyclist & Pedestrian Safety in North Carolina
This section includes a summary of the safety elements of the Division’s planning document, entitled Bicycling and Walking in North Carolina: A Long-Range Transportation Plan. Also shown is a summary of the safety priorities from the North Carolina Summit on Pedestrian and Bicycling Safety.

Safe Routes to Schools
This section provides information on the federally mandated program designed to benefit communities and people who participate in it. The benefits focus on improving children’s health by raising their activity levels, decreasing congestion and air pollution from motor vehicles there by improving the environment, improving the safety around schools for children to bicycle and walk, and building a sense of community.

Programs & Initiatives
This section provides information about the Basics of Bicycling Curriculum, Bicycle Helmet Initiatives, the Bike Repair Video, North Carolina School Crossing Guard Training Program, the Share the Road Initiative, and the Walk a Child to School Initiative.

Research & Reports
In this section you’ll find a description of the Interactive Crash Data Tool (the next bullet also links directly to this tool), Bicycle Helmet Research, School Walk Zone Study, and a Statewide Survey on Bicycling and Walking.

Interactive Crash Data Tool
You’ll find a description of the crash database and its interactive capabilities along with a link to the database site itself.

Resources & Links
This section lists resources from the Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation, including Riding Tips for Cyclists, Streetwise Cycling guide and a catalog of Bicycle Safety Materials (posters, print materials, videos, and curriculum guides) along with an Order Form. Also provided in this section are links to other North Carolina and to national resources.
