In 2005, the division began an ambitious campaign to become ISO 14001 compliant. This level of performance delivers the highest standard for preserving and protecting the state's natural resources.

The EMS was established by the division to:
Plan work with environmental aspects in mind;
Set objectives and targets that improve environmental policy;
Educate employees and the public about environmental issues that the division encounters on a regular basis; and
Inform the public of progress in the division's environmental stewardship efforts.
